Work-Life Balance: Thriving in Your Career During Perimenopause
Sep 20, 2026Today, we're tackling a topic that is near and dear to many of our hearts: how to thrive in our careers while navigating the ups and downs of perimenopause.
For many of us, our 40s and 50s are a time of significant professional growth and advancement. We may be taking on leadership roles, starting our own businesses, or hitting our stride in our chosen fields. But at the same time, we're also navigating the physical, emotional, and cognitive changes of perimenopause, which can sometimes feel like a second job in itself.
So, how can we find that elusive work-life balance and continue to thrive professionally during this transformative time? Here are some strategies to consider:
- Prioritize self-care: Make sure you're taking care of your basic needs, like getting enough sleep, eating nourishing foods, staying hydrated, and moving your body regularly. These simple acts of self-care can go a long way in helping you feel your best and perform at your highest level.
- Set boundaries: Be intentional about setting boundaries between your work and personal life. This might mean establishing clear work hours, saying no to non-essential commitments, or delegating tasks that can be handled by others. Remember, you don't have to do it all, and it's okay to prioritize your own well-being.
- Communicate with your boss and colleagues: If you're struggling with perimenopausal symptoms that are impacting your work, don't suffer in silence. Have an honest conversation with your boss or HR representative about your needs and any accommodations that might help you perform at your best. You may be surprised at how understanding and supportive they can be.
- Find your focus: Perimenopausal brain fog and difficulty concentrating can be frustrating, but there are strategies that can help. Try breaking big projects into smaller, more manageable tasks, minimizing distractions, and using tools like the Pomodoro Technique to stay focused and productive.
- Embrace your strengths: Remember that with age and experience come valuable skills, perspectives, and leadership qualities. Don't underestimate the unique value you bring to your work, and look for opportunities to leverage your strengths and expertise.
- Seek support: Surround yourself with supportive colleagues, mentors, and sponsors who believe in you and your potential. Consider joining a professional network or support group for women in your industry, or working with a career coach who can help you navigate challenges and opportunities.
Remember, thriving in your career during perimenopause is not about pushing yourself to the brink of burnout or trying to "power through" symptoms. It's about finding a sustainable balance that allows you to show up as your best self, both professionally and personally.
So, be proactive about advocating for your needs, prioritizing your well-being, and leveraging your unique strengths and experience. Keep on keeping on!
