How to Clean Out Your Pantry: A Step-by-Step Guide to Decluttering @mebykatie

We've all been there — the pantry is cluttered, filled with expired items, half-empty containers, and things you forgot you even had. A messy pantry can lead to food waste, stress, and frustration when trying to find ingredients for your next meal.

But fear not. You can transform your pantry into an organized and efficient space with time and dedication.

Step 1: Set a Schedule

The first step to a successful pantry declutter is setting aside time to tackle the task. Block out a few hours on a weekend or even an entire day if you have a large pantry. A designated time will help you stay focused and complete the project.

Step 2: Gather Your Supplies

Before you begin, gather some essential supplies:

  • Trash bags or boxes for expired items and donations
  • A vacuum or broom to clean up dust and debris
  • Cleaning solution and microfiber cloths for wiping down surfaces
  • Storage containers or baskets for organizing items
  • Labels and a marker or label maker for labeling containers
  • A notepad or digital device to create an inventory list

Step 3: Empty Your Pantry

Start by removing everything from your pantry. As you do this, sort items into categories, such as canned goods, spices, and baking supplies. This will make assessing what you have and what needs to be reorganized easier.

Step 4: Check Expiration Dates and Donate

Now that all your pantry items are laid out, go through each category and check for expired items. Dispose of anything past its expiration date or no longer safe to consume. If you come across unopened, non-perishable items you know you won't use, consider donating them to a local food bank or shelter.

Step 5: Clean the Pantry Space

With your pantry now empty, it's time to clean it thoroughly. Vacuum or sweep up any dust and debris, and then use a cleaning solution and microfiber cloth to wipe down shelves, walls, and the floor. This will create a clean slate for organizing your pantry items.

Step 6: Organize and Store

After you've cleaned the pantry, it's time to put everything back in an organized manner. Use storage containers or baskets to group items by category, and label each container or shelf for easy identification. This will make finding what you need a breeze and help prevent clutter from accumulating again.

When organizing your pantry, consider these tips:

  • Place frequently used items at eye level for easy access.
  • Store heavy items, like bulk bags of rice or flour, on lower shelves.
  • Use a lazy Susan for items like condiments and spices, making them easily accessible.
  • Utilize vertical space with stackable storage containers or shelf risers.
  • Store baking sheets and cutting boards vertically using tension rods or organizers.

Step 7: Create an Inventory List

As you put items back into your pantry, list everything you have. This will help you keep track of your pantry contents and make meal planning and grocery shopping more efficient. Update your inventory list regularly to stay organized. There's a great app that helps with this called Pantry Check.

Step 8: Maintain Your Organized Pantry

Now that your pantry is decluttered and organized, keeping it that way is essential. Set a schedule to check your pantry regularly for expired items, and consciously put things back in their designated spot after use. Regular maintenance will prevent your pantry from becoming a cluttered mess again.

A clean and organized pantry can make your life easier, save time, and reduce food waste. Staying organized is an ongoing process, so set aside time for regular maintenance to keep your pantry looking its best.
