3 Tips to Soothe an Upset Stomach Naturally

Sep 10, 2024

Got an Upset Stomach? Try these 3 Natural Remedies for Fast Relief. You know how unpleasant it can be to have an upset stomach. Between the abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, it can dampen your day.

As a functional and holistic health coach, I’m often asked for tips on how to soothe an upset stomach quickly and naturally. The good news is that several research-backed natural remedies can relieve gastrointestinal muscles, reduce inflammation, and calm nausea.

In this blog, I’ll share my top 3 natural solutions for fast relief when your stomach is upset.

These remedies work safely without the side effects of over-the-counter medications.

Natural Remedy #1: Sip on Soothing Ginger Tea

Ginger is one of the oldest natural remedies used for upset stomachs. This aromatic root contains gingerol, a phytonutrient that helps relax gastrointestinal muscles and ease nausea, cramps, and diarrhea.

According to studies, just 1 gram of ginger can significantly reduce nausea, vomiting, seasickness, and morning sickness. The World Health Organization recommends ginger as a first-line treatment for nausea.

Sipping ginger tea is an excellent way to tap into ginger’s stomach-soothing benefits.

To make ginger tea:

  • Peel and finely chop a 1-2 inch piece of fresh ginger root
  • Add the ginger to a mug and pour in hot (not boiling) water
  • Allow it to steep for 5-10 minutes to extract the gingerol
  • Add fresh lemon juice and raw honey to taste.

Drink the ginger tea when it cools to a comfortable temperature. You can drink ginger tea up to 3 times daily to ease mild stomach upset. The longer you steep the ginger, the stronger the tea will be.

For more potent effects, you can also take capsule-form ginger supplements. Follow dosage instructions and avoid taking ginger if you take blood thinners.

Natural Remedy #2: Sip on Peppermint Tea

Like ginger, peppermint is a traditional folk remedy for digestive problems. The active ingredient in peppermint is menthol, which helps relax the stomach and intestinal muscles. Studies show peppermint oil capsules can significantly improve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome-like abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea. And peppermint tea is an excellent option for soothing nausea.

To make a stomach-calming peppermint tea:

  • Add 2-3 tablespoons of fresh peppermint leaves (or 1-2 tsp dried leaves) to a mug
  • Pour in hot water and allow to steep for 5-7 minutes
  • Add lemon and raw honey if desired.

Drink the refreshing peppermint tea 2-3 times daily to ease an upset stomach. The soothing flavor also helps calm nausea. Peppermint is very safe, making it a great natural choice for children over age 5.

Natural Remedy #3: Take a Soothing Probiotic

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that help promote proper digestion and gut health. In many cases, a probiotic supplement can help “reset” your gut microbiome to ease stomach upset. Studies show probiotics help treat diarrhea, gas, bloating, constipation, and other symptoms caused by gastrointestinal issues. They help restore the balance between good and bad gut bacteria.

Look for a quality probiotic supplement with at least 10 billion CFUs and strains like Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacteria. Take as directed on the label.

Within 1-2 weeks of taking a probiotic, many people notice relief from chronic stomach woes and improved regularity. Combine probiotics with a healthy gut diet low in processed foods for best results.

Other Quick Tips for Upset Stomach Relief

Here are a few more quick natural tips that can calm an upset stomach:

  • Drink chamomile or fennel tea
  • Apply a warm compress to your abdomen
  • Take slow, deep breaths to relax the stomach muscles
  • Massage the abdomen gently in a clockwise motion
  • Limit fatty, spicy, or gas-producing foods
  • Stay hydrated with herbal teas and electrolyte drinks.
