What you can do about large pores?

Grrr! Large pores, what can you do about them? Plenty! Let’s start with the basics.

Genetics your pore size is determined by genetics. If your parents had large pores in their teens and 20's, you're more likely to have large pores, too. But just because you are genetically predisposed to large pores doesn't mean that you can't take steps to keep them clear and to avoid them getting clogged and stretched out.

Aging and sundamage breaks down our collagen , causing skin to lose its elasticity with the passing years. As the skin relaxes, pores dilate; we lose the firmness of youth and our pores get more visible. The sagging of the skin stretches pores open into “tear” shapes.

Pores aren't doors they don’t swing open to create a bigger opening or swing close to create a smaller one. Pores do not have muscles around their opening to allow them to open and close.  To put it simply, the size of your pores is proportional to the size of your oil glands. When you go get a facial and your aesthetician says she’s steaming your face to open up your pores, this is technically not  true. Steaming helps losen the sebum and other gunk that clogs your pores, but it doesn’t open them. Just like washing your face with cold water shrinks your pores.

Smoking and other bad lifestyle habits, inhaling nicotine regularly dries out your skin, shrinking your blood vessels that deliver oxygen and nourishment. This deprives your skin of important nutrients and accelerates the aging process called inflamm-aging. A bad western diet, unbalanced hormones, lack of proper hydration, a fondness for tanning beds, and negelecting to wash your face twice daily also qualifies for pore-expanding habits you might want to consider.

Develop a proper skincare regimen which includes cleansing twice daily along with mild exfoliation a twice a week can keep the skin clean and pores from being clogged with debris. An AHA or BHA based cleanser (Lactic Acid or Salicylic Acid) to help regulate sebum production. Corrective serums with Mancelic Acid, Niacinamide or Retinol. Even oily skin needs a moisturizer, choose a mattifying moisturizer and the right SPF.
