Symptoms vs Causes
- A symptom is any subjective evidence of disease or disorder. ex: acne, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis.
- A cause is a region or origin of something and the root from which the symptoms stem from. ex: nutritional imbalances, digestive imbalances.
The fundamental methods of combating acne can be visualized through this tree which represents how signs and symptoms stem from root causes including genetics, environment, and lifestyle. Based on the signs and symptoms that the client shares, an acne specialist are then able to look at the core clinical imbalances and develop a skin regimen and treatment plan that targets the root cause.
Acne is not a topical problem. It's like a tree, with deep roots from within. As an acne specialist, you need to do more than just treat the symptoms of acne. You need a solid bespoke treatment plan with a carefully curated home care regimen and you need a plan for a balanced, nourished, and healthy lifestyle for the client's clear skin success.

Everybody has Cutibacterium acnes bacteria—which is commonly blamed for causing acne. The skin biome is the ECOSYSTEM of microorganisms that live on the skin, your skin is colonized by millions and millions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and just like the microbes in your gut have a more significant impact on overall health, microbes on your skin, which is your largest organ, impact the way it looks and feels and its ability to serve as a barrier between your body and the outside world.
Research from several studies has shown that the skin bacteria Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes) and Staphylococcus epidermis and Malassezia (formerly known as Pityrosporum) are associated with the development of typical acne pathology. For decades, we believed that acne was particularly caused by the colonization of the bacterium C. acne, associated with increased levels of sebum production and retention hyperkeratosis during the teenage years.

Did you know?
Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermis produce antimicrobial chemicals, which help our innate immune system fight harmful microbes and maintain skin health and homeostasis. Unfortunately, when dysbiosis occurs, even these beneficial, commensal species can become pathogenic which triggers innate immune system activation. Inflammation is a critical component of acne, and a very common origin is from the gut. This leads to cutaneous inflammation and the development of well-known acne pathologies.
For nearly 100 years, studies conclude that acne pathology is multi-factorial, which includes the interaction of the gut-brain-skin axis to explain correlations among the gut microbiota, detoxification, emotional states, along with systemic and skin inflammation. These mechanisms are related to the dysregulation of the gut-brain-skin axis involving the hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA) and gut microbiota.
A three-step cookie-cutter one size fits all skin regimen is not ideal!
Every acne client is different and so are their root causes. Acne is a disease with a broad spectrum of severity and the skin microbiome is reflective of this significant variation. Acne is the result of a disrupted balance in the microbiota that contributes to disease severity, rather than attributing the condition to one harmful microorganism that has a pretty important role in keeping skin healthy. Although acne is caused by many root cause factors, the gut microbiome plays a key role in the progression and severity of the disease. The intimate relationship between the gut to the skin is referred to as the gut-skin axis. 70-80% of your immune system is found in your gut! A healthy gut is a healthy immune system and clear glowing skin.
